Warmer Weather Returns to London After Weeks of Gloomy Skies

Londoners can finally expect a break from the persistent grey skies this week, as temperatures are set to climb to an unseasonably warm 14°C by Friday, according to the Met Office. After more than a week of what’s been dubbed ‘anticyclonic gloom’—including a record-breaking seven consecutive sunless days in the capital—forecasters predict warmer weather and a noticeable shift towards milder conditions.

The Met Office expects sunshine to make a comeback on Monday and Tuesday, with temperatures sitting around 6°C before gradually rising throughout the week. By Friday, parts of London could reach 14°C, well above February’s usual average of 9°C for southern England. While this won’t break any records—Kew Gardens holds the February high of 21.2°C, recorded in 2019—many Londoners will likely welcome the improvement after weeks of dull, damp conditions.

Elsewhere in the UK, a weather divide is expected. While eastern parts of England are forecast to stay relatively dry, western areas could see some rainfall as milder Atlantic air gradually replaces the cold air that’s dominated from Scandinavia. Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan explained that this ‘battleground’ of air masses is responsible for the slow transition to milder temperatures.

Why Has It Been So Gloomy?

For those wondering why the UK has felt stuck under a blanket of grey for so long, the answer lies in a large anticyclone (a high-pressure system) that’s been sitting over Scandinavia, pushing cold easterly winds towards Britain. As the winds travelled across the Baltic and North Seas, they picked up moisture, which led to thick cloud cover across much of the country.

“That’s why we haven’t seen much in the way of sunshine in most of the UK recently,” said Morgan. Some parts of the country have reportedly seen up to 10 consecutive days without sunshine, edging close to record-breaking levels.

A Temporary Change or a Sign of Spring?

While the rise in temperatures and warmer weather is a welcome change, it doesn’t necessarily signal an early spring. The UK’s unpredictable climate means another cold snap isn’t out of the question. But for now, Londoners can enjoy a few brighter days, with some sunshine finally making an appearance after what has felt like an endless stretch of overcast skies.
