Officials said that the reptiles, which included 44 venomous vipers, were hidden in his checked-in luggage. The animals have been seized under multiple wildlife protection laws in the country.
The man has not yet been named and is custody. Photographs were posted on X of colourful snakes inside a dish. In the post on the social media platform, they said that three spider-tailed horned vipers, five Asian leaf turtles, and 44 Indonesian pit vipers were seized fom the passenger. It has not been clear where the reptiles were sourced.
While importing animals into India is not illegal, its wildlife protection law bans certain species, including those classified as endangered or protected, from being imported into the country. The relevant permits and licenses must be acquired by anyone who hopes to bring any wildlife into India.
Reports of banned animals being seized by custom officials from a passenger trying to smuggle them into the country are nothing new.
