Vehicle production in the UK down 14% in November
Vehicle production in the UK fell by 14.3% in November, with 65,932 units leaving factories, data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has revealed. The decline, it said, was driven by a slight reduction in car output, being down 1.7%, and a “much steeper” drop in commercial vehicle output by 78%, with only 2,806 units made. That is 9,943 fewer than in the same month last year.
The SMMT reports that it was the fourth successive monthly decline in vehicle production, with just 1,090 fewer cars made in the same month last year, as the situation “gradually normalises” following the recent cyber incident. Manufacture of vans, trucks, buses, and coaches has declined for the eighth month in a row.
The news, the SMMT said, comes during a “mixed week for the sector,” with the beginning of next generation volume electric car production in Sunderland, contrasting with the European Commission’s plans to permit “a greater range of technologies beyond 2035,” which it said will “put the UK out of step with its biggest market and biggest source of vehicles.”
“We need to avoid unnecessary complexity and uncertainty for businesses considering investment decisions in the UK,” the SMMT said.
