Vantage GT3 “ready to defend title” at Spa

Aston Martin is targeting more silverware as it returns to the world’s biggest GT3-only race with the Vantage GT3. The Crowdstrike 24 hours of Spa will see Aston Martin hoping to become the first British marque with back-to-back wins at the prestigious Belgian track.

The current Vantage GT3 achieved its maiden twice round-the-clock win on the challenging 4.4-mile circuit last year for an overall victory, the second for Aston Martin and the first since 1948. This weekend will see the 78th running of the Spa 24 Hours, where a record eight examples of the Vantage GT3 will make an appearance.

The Spa event is the third round of the GT World Challenge Europe powered by AWS Endurance Cup. It is the third major international race to feature Aston Martin in June, following the the FIA World Endurance Championship’s (WEC) 24 Hours of Le Mans and the ADAC Ravenol 24H Nürburgring.

It is one of the key events on the global endurance racing calendar, starting with a traditional parade along public roads from the Ardennes Forest circuit to the nearby town of Spa. This will be followed by two days of practice on the “daunting” track, featuring “some of the most challenging corners on planet earth,” including Eau Rouge/Raidillon, Blanchimont and Pouhon. The race will take place over the weekend and is renowned for being affected by the microclimate on the circuit.

Aston Martin first raced there in 1936, ending with a one-two finish in the up-to 1.5-litres class with a pair of Aston Martin Ulsters. This would lead eventually to an outright win in 1948 for St John Horsfall and Leslie Johnson aboard a DB1.
