Cycling in London Just Got Easier With This Updated Green Route Map

Cycling in London can be frustrating at the best of times. One minute you’re coasting through a designated cycle lane, and the next, it vanishes without warning, leaving you tangled in fast-moving traffic. And let’s not even get started on the city’s chaotic junctions. But there’s good news for London’s cyclists, one designer has stepped in to make life easier – an updated London Greenground Map.
Helen Ilus, a graphic designer with a passion for green spaces, has updated her popular London Greenground Map, which helps cyclists find routes connected to parks, waterways, and safe cycling networks. Designed as an alternative to riding on London’s busy roads, the map is completely free to download and use.
Originally launched in 2020 as a way to highlight London’s many green spaces, the Greenground Map has grown with each new edition. The latest 2025 update now includes the National Cycle Network, Cycleways, and extended cycle routes, making it easier than ever for riders to find scenic and stress-free journeys across the capital.
“Since I released the original map five years ago, it has grown significantly, now featuring over a thousand green spaces,” Ilus told Positive News. “I hope this map encourages cyclists to green their commutes or explore new routes for leisure cycling. Cycling is growing increasingly popular everywhere, but I think many of the cycle paths are not particularly green or enjoyable to cycle.”

The newly updated map features well-known scenic routes such as the Lea Valley, River Ravensbourne, and the Grand Union Canal, helping cyclists navigate London while avoiding high-traffic areas.
The London Greenground Map is also available to download for free via Helen Ilus’s website.
