Unwanted toys: repair & donate this Christmas
Richmond Council is asking residents to “spread some holiday cheer” by repairing and donating unwanted toys to “help struggling families” this Christmas. Every year, it said, around 8.5 million toys in the UK are thrown away. Rather than “letting good toys go to waste, why not give them a second life,” it added.
“If your children will be unwrapping new gifts this Christmas, take a moment to gather toys in good condition that are no longer played with.” By repairing and donating them this festive period, you will “not only reduce waste,” but also help families “access quality toys at little or no cost.”
You can find a local repair cafés such as Twickenham Repair Cafe or Kew the Transition repair and share events. Or, if you prefer to do it yourself, borrow tools like sewing machines from the Library of Things. You can sign up for a 25% concessionary membership or use code TKLOT for 15% off your first borrow.
Unwanted toys can be exchanged for free via Richmond Freegle. Book a collection with TRAID for clothes, shoes, and electrical items (including toys), and follow the link to find charity shops near you.
All unwanted toys donated are “a step towards reducing waste and supporting families who need it most,” says Richmond. “Together, we can make Christmas special for every child in Richmond upon Thames.”
