Universal Studios UK: A Theme Park Near London Could Be on the Horizon
A Universal Studios UK theme park may soon become a reality, with talks between the entertainment giant and the UK government still ongoing. If approved, the Universal theme park near London could be the largest in Europe, bringing world-class attractions, thousands of jobs, and a major tourism boost to the region.
While nothing is confirmed yet, the proposed Universal Studios UK location in Bedfordshire—just under an hour from London—has already been acquired by the company, covering 476 acres with the potential to expand to 700 acres. If built, it would be the first Universal theme park in Europe, following successful parks in the US, Japan, China, and Singapore.
The new resort is expected to include a 500-room hotel, major film-based attractions, and thousands of jobs, making it a significant development for the UK’s tourism and entertainment industry. But when will it open, and is it guaranteed to happen?
Will Universal Studios UK Actually Be Built?
Universal Destinations and Experiences has confirmed that discussions with the UK government are ongoing. Speaking in the House of Commons, Blake Stephenson, MP for Mid Bedfordshire, pressed Treasury Minister Darren Jones on when negotiations would conclude. The response? No fixed timeline. “Negotiations are, as he will know, negotiations,” Jones replied, suggesting that while talks continue, nothing is finalised yet.
A spokesperson for Universal stated:
“We are having productive conversations with the UK government and will have more to share at the appropriate time.”
The company has a strong track record of developing world-class theme parks, with resorts in Orlando, Hollywood, Singapore, Beijing, and Osaka. More details on Universal’s global resorts and existing attractions can be found on Universal’s official website.
What Would Universal Studios UK Include?
If approved, the Universal theme park near London is expected to bring some of the brand’s most famous attractions, such as:
- Harry Potter rides (already a major draw at Universal Orlando)
- Jurassic Park roller coasters
- Fast & Furious action-based experiences
- Minions and Super Mario attractions (seen at Universal Studios Japan)
This would make it a direct competitor to Disneyland Paris, which has long been Europe’s top film-based theme park.
Why Bedfordshire?
The Universal Studios UK location would be well-placed near Luton Airport, making it accessible to both Londoners and international visitors. Its proximity to major transport links could make it an ideal location for a major new theme park in England, drawing millions of visitors annually.
When Will Universal Studios UK Open?
At this stage, there’s no confirmed timeline. Universal has ambitious plans, but until the UK government gives the green light, construction cannot begin. Industry experts suggest that if planning is approved in the next year or two, the park could open by the early 2030s—but that’s speculation for now.
With previous projects, such as the cancelled London Resort, failing to take off, Universal may take a cautious approach before making a final decision.
A Universal Studios UK theme park near London would be a huge attraction for both locals and tourists. But until negotiations conclude, nothing is set in stone. If approved, it would bring a world-class entertainment destination to the UK, boosting the economy and giving theme park fans a major reason to celebrate.
