Travel warnings to US issued by UK and Germany

Germany and the UK have issued travel warnings for anyone looking to visit the USA amid the country’s strict border policies. This could have significant impacts on the travel industry. The British Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) updated its travel advice, emphasising that American authorities “set and enforce entry rules strictly,” and warning travels that they “may be liable to arrest or detention” if they “break the rules.”

This comes following the detention of Rebecca Burke, a 28-year-old Briton deported over visa issues. Germany expressed similar sentiment on 19th March when its Foreign Ministry clarified that a visa or ESTA does not guarantee entry, citing cases of its nationals detained at US borders including a legal resident.

The travel warnings come following stricter immigration policies under Donald Trump. Enhanced visa vetting and border security measures have caused difficulties for visitors to the country. A number of people have also been sent to El Salvador to be imprisoned there under suspicion of being gang members, though none have stood trial for it. One case is of a Venezuelan professional football player detained because his Real Madrid tattoo was interpreted by authorities as a gang tattoo.

Airlines including BA and Lufthansa could feel ripple effects following these travel warnings as many tourists may change their plans. Passengers could expect tighter security and carriers would have to ensure compliance to avoid mid-flight turnarounds or passenger deportation.

“The timing couldn’t be worse for an industry still recovering from pandemic-era losses,” says Aviation Source News. “With spring break and summer travel seasons looming, these US travel warnings could deter European visitors. The European market is a key demographic for U.S. tourism and aviation revenue”
