Tiny Forest planted in Shepherd’s Bush

Hammersmith & Fulham’s latest Tiny Forest has taken root in Shepherds Bush with the help of green-fingered volunteers and local residents. Around 600 new whips were planted in Norland Open Space, which is near the Nourish Hub on the Edward Woods Estate.
“Tiny Forests are incredible,” Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Ecology, said. “They’re small but mighty and are helping us support local wildlife while improving the look of our parks and cleaning the air we breathe. Each new forest is just part of our work to green H&F and to make sure our open spaces are great places to visit and play in.”
The tiny forest is home to sixteen different native species of trees – all densely planted into a space the size of a tennis court. Species include sweet chestnuts, holly, rowan, hornbeam and wild cherry trees.
Within three years, the forest is expected to attract more than 500 different animal and plant species, boosting the parks biodiversity. It will also help clean the borough’s air. More than seven per cent of local deaths in 2022 were linked to toxic air. Which makes H&F the tenth worst area for air pollution in the country, according to Public Health England.
Each whip planted will help pull pollution out of the air and replace it with cleaner air that’s better for residents, visitors, pets and wildlife. The forest was planted with the help of volunteers who were kept well fed throughout the day with hot drinks and refreshments from the Nourish Hub.
