Third runway for Heathrow: support hinted by chancellor

The chancellor has hinted at government support for a Heathrow expansion including a third runway for the airport. “Sustainable aviation and economic growth go hand in hand,” Rachel Reeves told the BBC, though she had said that she would not be commenting on “speculation,” adding that the government will reveal its plans in due course.
She did say that a third runway for the airport would “will mean that instead of circling London, flights can land,” adding that sustainable fuel would help to cut down on the carbon emissions from flying.
An announcement backing its expansion is expected soon as part of a major speech by Reeves on plans to boost the nation’s economy. The government has already revealed its plans to fast-track permission for housing and commercial developments close to train stations. It also has said that it wishes to pare back environmental impact assessments.
In an interview with the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Reeves gave a more optimistic look over the economy. This is in contrast with recent months as the government had warned about the nation’s public finances.
She said that she disagreed with the idea that “low growth is our destiny,” pledging to go “further and faster” in removing barriers that block investment.
When asked about the likelihood of an announcement on a Heathrow, she did not give a direct answer. Instead, the chancellor said that the government has already signed off the expansion of Stansted and London City Airport. “That will be good for investment and trade in our country and also good for families wanting to go on cheap holidays,” she said.
London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan had criticised the airport’s expansion over its impact on air quality, noise, and the capital’s hopes of achieving net zero.
“A lot has changed in terms of aviation,” she replied, including sustainable fuels and a future that could include electric planes.
“I believe that clean energy, that reducing our carbon emissions are good for economic growth,” the chancellor said.
