Suzuki has taken the wraps of its first electric car, the e Vitara. The compact crossover SUV will be assembled in Milan with sales expected to start in the summer of 2025. The new car is based on the eVX concept shown in 2023.
The design of the new car signals an evolution from the current Suzuki lineup, especially the current Vitara. But in keeping true to its namesake, an electric 4WD system, which Suzuki calls ALLGRIP-e, will allow “not only off-road capability but also powerful performance.”
The Japanese manufacturer says that the theme for the design is “High-Tech & Adventure” adding that it embodies “the advanced feel of [an electric car] and the robust nature of an SUV, inspiring a sense of adventure. Large tyres and a long-wheelbase define the exterior.
Inside is a relatively small screen by modern standards, meaning more physical controls, something that many purists crave.
The electric powertrain makes use of an integrated motor and inverter along with a lithium iron-phosphate battery that Suzuki says was designed for safety and reliability. It helps it achieve “nimble acceleration from a standstill and sharp acceleration during overtaking.”
But a Vitara has always had some offroad capability. ALLGRIP-e is the electric 4WD system that utilises two independent ‘eAxles’ one at the front and one at the rear. This allows for better performance and precise control. It also incorporates a Trail mode that should help on rough terrain, putting the brakes on a spinning tyre and distributing torque to the opposite side.
Under the skin is an all-new platform designed specifically for electric cars. This suggests more models to come, possibly replacements for the Swift and S-Cross.
“Introduction of the e VITARA,” says Suzuki, “represents a significant milestone in achieving carbon neutrality. Following the launch of the e VITARA, we will continue to expand our BEV line- up and propose mobility solutions tailored to the needs of specific countries and regions.”
