Sustainable fuels power Mazda to the Arctic

Mazda’s latest venture into sustainable fuels has taken a significant leap, with twelve 2025 Mazda CX-30s completing a 1,344-mile journey from Malmö, Sweden, to Tromsø, Norway, powered exclusively by 100% sustainable biofuel. This initiative underscores the potential of sustainable fuel as a viable alternative to fossil fuels, aligning with the UK’s commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The CX-30s utilised SUSTAIN’s second-generation biofuel, derived from agricultural waste not suitable for consumption. This approach captures carbon during plant growth and releases it during combustion, contrasting with fossil fuels that emit additional CO₂ from underground reserves. Notably, the vehicles required no modifications to operate on this fuel, averaging over 40mpg throughout the expedition.
Jeremy Thomson, Managing Director of Mazda Motors UK, emphasised the brand’s multi-solution strategy: “At Mazda, we will continue to develop the internal combustion engine to meet consumer demand in parallel with our battery electric development.” This approach includes ongoing research into biofuels, algae fuels, and synthetic fuels, with Mazda being a member of the eFuel Alliance.
Since 2023, Mazda says its Heritage Fleet has operated on sustainable fuel, and an MX-5 completed laps across all four UK home nations using the same. Additionally, a group of MX-5s journeyed from Land’s End to John O’Groats on sustainable fuel, showcasing its practicality for both modern and classic cars.
For UK drivers, this journey demonstrates that sustainable fuels can seamlessly integrate into daily life, offering an immediate solution to reduce emissions without waiting for widespread electric vehicle adoption.
