Surrey Quays station to get major improvements to accessibility
Work in delivering step-free access to both platforms at Surrey Quays station is “progressing well,” being on track to completion in the summer of 2026, according to TfL. The works will go towards improving the station’s accessibility and “transforming journeys for thousands of customers.”
In what TfL calls a “major milestone,” last month, a prefabricated footbridge was lifted into position over a weekend closure of the Windrush line. When finished, the new footbridge will “provide relief to the existing narrow staircases, which can often suffer from congestion at peak times.”
Work on the new second station entrance and ticket hall on platform 2 is also progressing well, TfL says. A timber roof and the external roof system have now been installed. Work will continue on the installation of two new lifts, providing step-free access for the first time to both platforms. This will help those with mobility impairments and any parents with pushchairs.
Once the work is completed at Surrey Quays station, there will be easier and more direct access to Canada Water, British Land, and AustralianSuper’s 53-acre masterplan to deliver thousands of new homes, amenities, and new workspaces in development over the next decade.
The all-new entrance opposite Lower Road will feature a new ticket hall and new gateline which is expected to be used by around 60% of passengers using Surrey Quays station. This will help with congestion during the station’s busiest time at the existing entrance on the south side of Lower Road.
The work on Surrey Quays station is part of wider improvements to the London Overground route. TfL says it will help to unlock 14,000 new homes. The project is funded by the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government as part of its Housing Infrastructure Programme with a contribution from British Land.
The Windrush line which includes Surrey Quays station is also being upgraded to allow more trains to run on the route, boosting capacity to meet growing demand.
