Sporting events in London deliver £230 million economic boost

London sporting events generated a £230 million boost to the capital’s economy in 2024, according to a new City Hall report. London sporting events drew 480,000 fans across six headline fixtures, from the UEFA Champions League Final at Wembley to the MLB London Series at London Stadium, attracting 202 million global viewers, underlining the city’s status as a premier sports destination.

The report, produced by Think Beyond, calculates direct economic impact through organiser, spectator and attendee spend. Events featured include the Formula E London E-Prix at ExCeL London, the London Athletics Meet on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and three NFL games split between Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and Wembley. Since 2007, NFL fixtures alone have generated over £600 million in spectator spend and welcomed 3 million fans to London games.

Beyond the commercial figures, London sporting events have delivered social benefits. More than 6,000 young Londoners have taken part in NFL Foundation UK programmes to develop skills and confidence, while MLB’s First Pitch programme has introduced almost 4,500 youngsters to baseball and softball.

Looking ahead, the capital is gearing up for a packed 2025 calendar. Women’s sport takes centre stage, from the Women’s Rugby World Cup final at Twickenham, set to break attendance records, to the return of women’s tennis at Queen’s Club after more than 50 years. Further ahead, London will host UEFA EURO 2028 fixtures, back another bid for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2035 and pursue ambitions for the 2040 Olympics and Paralympics.
