In a groundbreaking feat of British engineering, the McMurtry Spéirling has become the world’s first car to drive upside down. This electric hypercar, developed in Gloucestershire, achieved the stunt using its proprietary Downforce-on-Demand™ system, which generates over 2,000kg of downforce even at a standstill.
The demonstration involved driving the Spéirling onto a custom-built rig that rotated 180 degrees, positioning the car upside down. Thanks to the powerful fan system, the vehicle remained adhered to the surface, defying gravity without any mechanical restraints. This achievement turns a long-held motorsport theory into reality, showcasing the car’s advanced aerodynamic capabilities.
Beyond this stunt, the Spéirling has also shattered the Top Gear Test Track record. With a lap time of 55.9 seconds, it outpaced the previous record by 3.1 seconds, a benchmark set by a 2004 Renault R24 Formula 1 car. The car’s impressive performance is attributed to its lightweight design, weighing under 1,000kg, and its 1,000bhp electric powertrain.
Its distinctive gloss black falcon camouflage livery pays homage to the company’s logo, the peregrine falcon, symbolising speed and agility. This design choice also nods to the original McMurtry fan car unveiled at the 2021 Goodwood Festival of Speed. With only 100 units of the Spéirling set for production by 2026, this hypercar represents a significant milestone in British automotive engineering.
