SMMT responds to government review of ICE car ban

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has welcomed the government’s review of the end of sale date for cars powered solely by petrol and diesel, and changes to the flexibilities around the Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate.

Recently, the government announced that it is hoping to consult with the car industry over its future and the ban on the sale of brand-new petrol and diesel cars in 2030. The intention behind the ban is part of the government’s plan to transition to zero-emissions vehicles.

The government revealed that it will be collaborating with the industry to allow for opportunities for economic growth and improve standards for employees.

Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander launched the consultation on Christmas Eve to gather expert opinions on the plan towards the phase-out and guarantee a successful transition towards zero-emissions vehicles.

“These are both critical issues for an industry that is facing significant challenges globally as it tries to decarbonise ahead of natural market demand,” the SMMT said. “Aside from the billions invested in new technologies and products, it has cost manufacturers in excess of £4 billion in discounting in the UK this year alone. This is unsustainable and, with the 2025 market looking under even greater pressure, it is imperative we get an urgent resolution, with a clear intent to adapt the regulation to support delivery, backed by bold incentives to stimulate demand. Such action will support not only the industry, but also deliver for the economy, consumer, government and the environment.”

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) is one of the largest and most influential trade associations in the UK. It supports the interests of the UK automotive industry at home and abroad, promoting the industry to government, stakeholders and the media.
