Shebara Resort, futuristic pods, to debut in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia is continuing work on the Shebara Resort, a futuristic development of pod-like villas on the Red Sea. This is part of the country’s goal towards becoming a tourism hotspot.

Shebara Resort was designed by Killa Design, the same company behind Dubai’s Museum of the Future, and its interior came from Studio Paolo Ferrari. It is located in an isolated location off the Saudi Arabian coast in Tabuk and can be reached by seaplane.

The resort will comprise 73 villas in total, 38 being sea-based and 35 being land-based. The sea-based villas will feature a futuristic stainless-steel pod-like design. While they appear to floating above the sea, they actually cantilever out from a supporting structure.

These are being described as “a majestic string of pearls,” with the sea-based villas boasting up to two bedrooms and occupancy of up to two adults, one child, and an infant. The land-based ones will be similar but larger, having up to four bedrooms and sleep up to eight adults and four children.

“Stand in front of one of the orbs and they seem to disappear into the horizon, shimmering almost like a mirage,” says the resort’s press release. “The bottom of the villas reflects sea or sand and the roof reflects the sky, constantly changing from sunrise to sunset, becoming part of the environment that surrounds them. Overwater villas are suspended above the waves, and a mere stone’s throw from colorful coral gardens that surround the resort. Set back over 50 meters [164 ft] from the natural coral reef, the villas’ supporting columns touch only a few square meters of ground, a light touch approach that aligns with the enduring commitment to protect the thriving habitats of the lagoon.”

Because of its isolated location, the Shebara Resort will include a desalination plant to produce water, as well as an on-site solar farm to generate electricity. The solar panels will be arranged into a circular layout, inviting guests to pass through them on walking or biking trails as they enter.
