Hosts Morocco will face Senegal in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following two dramatic semi-finals. The Atlas Lions secured their place in Rabat by beating Nigeria’s Super Eagles 4-2 after a penalty shootout following a goalless draw, while the Lions of Teranga saw off Salah’s Egypt side 1-0, ending the Pharaoh’s chances of a record extending eighth AFCON title.
Backed by a passionate home crowd, Morocco saw off pressure from Nigeria for 120 minutes in a tense semi-final. Neither side could break the deadlock, with clear chances being few and far between thanks to defensive discipline at both ends of the pitch. It would be decided by spot kicks with Morocco converting four of its five, sparking celebrations as the 2022 World Cup semi-finalists reached their first AFCON final since winning it on home soil in 1976.
Meanwhile, Senegal saw a more direct route to the final, overcoming Egypt for a 1-0 win in a tightly contested meeting at the Stade de Tangier. The 2021 champions took control against the more experienced side with Sadio Mane’s strike being the decider.
On Saturday 17th January, Egypt and Nigeria will go head-to-head for the bronze meal in the third-place play-off in Casablanca. Meanwhile, Senegal and Morocco will face each other in Rabat the following day for a chance to be crowned African champions.
