Sean O’Neill’s Killer Jailed for Life After Hayes Stabbing

It took nearly a year to bring Sean O’Neill’s killer to justice, but the man responsible for the fatal stabbing has finally been sentenced. Dellan Charles, 23, was handed a life sentence at Kingston Crown Court after he was found guilty of murdering 30-year-old Sean O’Neill in broad daylight on Reynolds Road, Hayes, on 18th May 2023. The attack, which was caught on CCTV, saw Charles chase O’Neill down a quiet street before stabbing him multiple times with two knives, shouting “die, die, die” as he delivered the fatal blows.

Sean O’Neill, described by his family as a “much-loved son and brother,” had been caught in the middle of a violent dispute between two groups. While running away and posing no threat, he became the target of Charles’ brutal assault. Detective Inspector Kevin Martin, who led the case, said, “Sean was attacked in an act of pure malice. He was hunted down, cornered, and subjected to a violent attack that cost him his life.”

A Year-Long Manhunt Ends in Coventry

After carrying out the murder, Charles fled the scene, slipping away through suburban gardens. For nearly a year, he evaded capture as police conducted an extensive manhunt. It wasn’t until 26th March 2024 that detectives issued a public appeal, asking for help in locating him. Within 24 hours, fresh information led officers to an address in Coventry. There, Charles was finally tracked down, arrested, and swiftly charged with O’Neill’s murder the following day.

The trial exposed the sheer brutality of the attack, with CCTV footage played in court showing Charles’ relentless pursuit of his victim. Prosecutors detailed how the stabbing was premeditated and that Charles had armed himself with two knives before the altercation. The jury took little time to find him guilty of murder in December, and on 18th March 2025, he was sentenced to life with a minimum term of 23 years behind bars.

“Unimaginable Grief” for the O’Neill Family

For Sean O’Neill’s family, the sentencing brought some measure of closure, but it could never undo the devastation of losing him. “We are living with unimaginable grief,” his relatives said in a statement. “Sean was a kind, fun-loving person with a big heart and a charming smile. His absence is felt every single day.”

Despite their pain, the family expressed gratitude to the police and Crown Prosecution Service for ensuring Charles faced justice. “We appreciate the efforts of the Metropolitan Police and everyone involved in bringing about this conviction,” they added.

The case is another reminder of the impact of knife crime in London. The Metropolitan Police continues to urge anyone with information about violent crime to come forward. More details on how the force tackles serious violence can be found at the official Met Police website.
