Scarlett Johansson Condemns AI Misuse Amid Deepfake Video Controversy

In a recent incident, actress Scarlett Johansson has raised concerns about the misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) after a deepfake video surfaced online. The video falsely portrays her and other Jewish celebrities, such as David Schwimmer and Jerry Seinfeld, wearing T-shirts with the Star of David and a provocative gesture, accompanied by the word “Kanye”. This fabrication was intended as a protest against Kanye West’s recent antisemitic remarks and merchandise sales.
Scarlett Johansson, known for her roles in films like “Black Widow,” expressed her dismay, stating that while she has zero tolerance for antisemitism or hate speech, the potential for AI to amplify such messages poses a greater threat than any individual accountable for it. She emphasised the need to address AI misuse to prevent losing our grasp on reality.
The deepfake video also misrepresented other notable figures, including Steven Spielberg, Adam Sandler, and Sacha Baron Cohen, without their consent. The video, bearing the slogan “Enough is enough. Join the fight against antisemitism,” was created by digital marketers Guy Bar and Ori Bejerano from the Israel-based agency Gitam BBDO. Their intention was to respond forcefully to antisemitic actions, such as Kanye West’s recent sale of swastika-emblazoned T-shirts on his website.
West, who now goes by Ye, has faced significant backlash for his antisemitic statements and merchandise. His talent agency, 33 & West, terminated their relationship with him, and platforms like Shopify have removed his online store for policy violations. Additionally, a former employee has filed a lawsuit against West, alleging wrongful termination and discrimination following his offensive remarks.
This situation highlights the dual challenges of combating hate speech and addressing the ethical implications of AI technology. As deepfake technology becomes more sophisticated, the potential for its misuse grows, raising questions about authenticity and consent in digital media.
