Rowing Boat Capsizes in the River Thames: One Man Still Missing

Emergency services are continuing their search of the River Thames after a rowing boat capsizes at Sunbury Lock on Friday morning, 11th October. According to police, six individuals were involved in the incident, but only five have been safely accounted for. A man in his 60s remains missing, and his family is being updated as the search continues.

Weybridge Rowing Club issued a statement, confirming that the boat and its “supporting coaching launch” encountered difficulties during the incident. “We are deeply saddened by this accident,” the club added. Three rowers and the coach were treated in hospital following the incident.

The search for the missing man from the Richmond area resumed over the weekend and extended into Monday, October 14th, with the assistance of specialist police search officers, Surrey Search and Rescue, and Kent Search and Rescue. A significant emergency service presence, including police, fire and rescue, paramedics, and the coastguard, has been part of the ongoing effort.

Surrey Police confirmed that six people had entered the water when the river boat capsizes, including a member of the public unaffiliated with the group who attempted to assist. Authorities are also appealing for any footage of the incident, asking the public not to share it on social media out of respect for the man’s family.

Chief Inspector for North Surrey, Andy Jenkins, expressed the severity of the situation, saying: “This is a very distressing time for all involved, and we continue to support our partners in the search for the missing man. Our enquiries to establish the exact circumstances of how the boat capsized remain ongoing, but at this time we do not believe there are any suspicious circumstances or third-party involvement.”

If you have any footage of the incident, police request that you share it via their webchat, online reporting tool, or by calling 101, quoting reference PR/45240116388.
