Preparing for a road trip is crucial for drivers heading off this summer. New research shows British holidaymakers travelling by car within the UK will cover an average of 563 miles, while those driving overseas in their own vehicles are looking at around 815 miles. With those distances in mind, holiday car preparation is essential for a smooth journey.
Drawing from a Kwik Fit survey of over 2,000 UK adults, the study highlights that one in six motorists, around 4.9 million drivers, won’t check their tyre pressures before setting off. Many will dedicate nearly 36 minutes to curating travel tunes or grab 22 minutes picking sweets instead. But while snacks and playlists matter, so do the basics: tyre tread, coolant, oil, screenwash and even air-conditioning systems are often overlooked.
Specifically, 28 % of drivers admit they’ll skip coolant checks, 22 % won’t check oil, 19 % neglect screenwash, and another 22% forget tyre tread. A quarter of drivers on a road trip to Europe don’t check destination driving rules, and almost the same proportion fails to ensure insurance or breakdown cover is valid abroad. With varying regulations, such as emissions stickers, hi-vis vests, safety equipment and UK number‑plate sticker requirements, this is far from trivial.
For your summer escape, take a moment before you pack your bags: check your tyre pressures against manufacturer specs, top up coolant, oil and screenwash, and confirm your European documents and insurance are up to date.
