A charity working towards bringing species back to Britain, including elk, bison, and beavers, has been given funding to support its work. Rewilding Britain is a charity that focuses on nature and its restoration. It has been awarded up to £15,000 to 13 projects for its Rewilding Innovation Fund.
Some of these projects hope to see species including the bison, beaver, and European elk return to Britain. Rewilding means working towards creating the right conditions in some ecosystems that would allow nature to thrive with little outside interference.
“Keystone species like elk, bison and beaver play a vital role in bringing nature back to life,” Rebecca Wrigley, chief executive of Rewilding Britain, said. “They help repair ecosystems and shape wild places in ways that benefit wildlife, people and the climate. Successfully reintroducing missing species like these is absolutely crucial.”
Funding has been awarded to Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust for a joint project that will explore the return of the elk to the UK. The animals, also known as moose, are known to look in woodlands for food and graze in wetlands.
Similar to beavers, they are crucial in keeping their habitat healthy. Grazing helps surrounding woodlands to regrow, allowing it to flourish. Their trampling helps keep clearings open.
The rewilding project hopes to work towards their reintroduction into two existing beaver enclosures. It would be the first time the two species existed together in the UK for 3,000 years.
