Renault 5 Turbo 3E revives a rally icon

If you’ve got a soft spot for classic rally cars, then Renault’s latest creation might just get your heart racing. Meet the Renault 5 Turbo 3E, a modern electric reboot of the iconic Renault 5 Turbo and Turbo 2 from the 1980s. These were cars that dominated rally circuits and became cult classics. Now, Renault is bringing that same raw energy into the 21st century, with an all-electric twist.

But make no mistake,  this is no ordinary EV. Renault is calling it a “mini-supercar”, blending the agility of a hot hatch with the power of a high-performance machine. With a staggering 540 horsepower, a lightweight carbon-fibre structure, and rear-wheel drive, this car is built for track, rally, and road. It can go from 0-100 km/h in under 3.5 seconds, packs 4,800 Nm of torque, and even comes with a drift-assist mode.

For those who love the technical details, the Renault 5 Turbo 3E is built on a custom EV platform, optimised for performance. The battery sits low in the chassis for better handling, and it’s paired with an 800-volt system, meaning rapid charging from 15% to 80% in just 15 minutes. So, whether you’re tearing up a track or cruising through London, this car won’t keep you waiting long.

Inside, it’s all about racing DNA. Bucket seats, a six-point harness, and a rally-style handbrake set the tone, while digital screens blend retro design with modern connectivity. Renault’s OpenR Link system with Google built-in ensures up-to-date maps and seamless integration for daily driving.

Only 1,980 units will be made (a nod to the year the original Renault 5 Turbo launched), and each will be individually numbered. Buyers can also customise everything, from the paintwork to interior trims, making each car truly unique.

Renault says its aim is to push the boundaries of electric performance while celebrating its motorsport heritage. If you’ve ever dreamed of driving a classic rally car with modern tech, this might just be your chance. Reservations open soon, with the first deliveries expected in 2027.
