New App ‘Read On’ Launched to Encourage Reading Among Londoners

A new app inspired by the popular ‘Couch to 5k’ fitness plan has been launched to encourage Londoners to read more. The app, named ‘Read On,’ is a collaborative effort between Barbican & Community Libraries and librarians across London, developed by London Libraries, the national library charity Libraries Connected.

Read On Features and Goals

Read On is designed to make reading a regular habit for its users through curated recommendations, reading challenges, interactive quizzes, and personalized reading plans. The app aims to inspire Londoners to not only increase the number of books they read but also to explore a wider range of genres, authors, and styles.

The app’s integrated map feature allows users to locate their nearest London library, attend events, and connect with fellow book lovers. The team behind Read On hopes that the app will transform the traditional ‘beach read’ into a year-round habit, with benefits such as stress reduction and increased self-esteem.

Access and Availability

Residents can download the Read On app on both iOS and Android platforms. Additionally, they can visit Artizan Street Library, Barbican Library, or Shoe Lane Library for more information.

Funding and Development

The development of Read On was made possible by funding from the LibraryOn grant programme, supported by Arts Council England and facilitated by the British Library. The LibraryOn 2023 grant fund aims to enhance the digital presence and discoverability of library services for both new and existing users.

Novellic, a London-based team with experience in crafting reader-facing mobile apps for publishers and book charities, developed the Read On app. Their flagship book club app powers the book recommendations in Read On.

Statements from Key Figures

Munsur Ali, Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Culture, Heritage, and Libraries Committee, expressed his enthusiasm for the app, saying, “We know that many people are very keen to read more, but they feel that they don’t have the time, or they become distracted, so we hope that Read On will help them gradually increase the number and range of books that they read with realistic and achievable goals. Whether they are an avid reader or someone who hasn’t picked up a book in years, we support Read On’s aim to help revive the joy of reading in the digital age.”

Tiina Hill, Head of Delivery at LibraryOn, highlighted the app’s role in boosting the digital capabilities of London libraries. “Read On brilliantly supports digital projects in libraries through thought-provoking challenges and quizzes. It creates an innovative way for new and existing users to engage with their library online. We are delighted that the LibraryOn map has been integrated into the app, helping users find recommended books in their nearest library.”

Candide Kirk, founder of Novellic, shared her excitement about the project. “We were thrilled to get involved with this project. We could immediately see how the unique features identified by the librarians would complement existing reader tools. Our experience in building bookish apps has enabled us to deliver a quality reader experience that achieves that vision. We are particularly proud to power the book recommendations on Read On directly from our flagship Novellic app.”
