Pregunta concept from Lamborghini to go to auction

The last Lamborghini concept car “built on a pure Lamborghini platform,” the Pregunta, is set to be auctioned for the first time in over a decade, at the Broad Arrow Zoute Concours Auction.

Concept cars rarely make it to production, and almost never end up for sale, often kept in storage or destroyed. But they always manage to capture the imagination of enthusiasts for their unique design and outlandish ideas.

The 1998 Lamborghini Pregunta is one of the most elusive. The rarely seen car is the result of a collaboration between the Italian car maker and French coachbuilder Carrosserie Heuliez. It is expected to fetch between €2,500,000 and €3,500,000.

Originally commissioned when Lamborghini was under Chrysler ownership, it debuted at the 1998 Paris Motor Show, months after the Volkswagen bought the Italian supercar maker. Based on a Diablo, it is considered by some to be Lamborghini’s last truly radical concept car.

Syled by Heuliez’s head of design, Marc Deschamps, who was also responsible for the Lamborghini Jalpa, the Pregunta takes inspiration from fighter jets, similar to some of Lamborghini’s more recent designs, including the Reventón, Egoista concept, and Aventador. Specifically, it is inspired by the French Dassault Rafale.

The carbon fibre bodywork from Heuliez comprises of enormous air intakes, mimicking those of the fighter plane, as does the canopy-like doors, wraparound glass, and the matching matte grey paint. Inside, the fighter-jet inspiration continues. Glass screens and aviation-style seats give a unique interior that was extremely radical in 1998.

Diablo underpinnings mean a 5.7-litre V12 with a five-speed manual gearbox, allowing it to reach 100km/h (62mph) in just 3.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 337 km/h (210mph).
