Poppies installation coming to Tower of London

A new installation at the Tower of London will see the iconic landmark “flooded” with blood-red poppies to commemorate the end of the Second World War. The ceramic flowers will be poured across the lawn in front of the White Tower on 6th May. They will stay there for six months until remembrance on Armistice Day, 11th November.

The stunning poppy display will feature almost 30,000 poppies, initially created for a 2014 installation at the tower, Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red. On loan from the Imperial War Museum, they are returning to their original home. They will form a crater that will resemble a wound at the heart of the iconic landmark which was targeted by bombing during the Blitz.

The specially commissioned installation will also have a place to allow visitors to remember and reflect on the sacrifices made during the Second World War. “Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few,” as Churchill once said.

It is expected to create a very striking image and will serve as a reminder of the losses caused by war as well as its longer lasting impact.

The ceramic poppies were designed and created by Paul Cummins, an internationally renowned artist. The installation itself is the work of London-born designer Tom Piper.

This unique installation will be on display from May 6th to November 11th. You can find out more and plan your visit here.
