Petrol and diesel car ban to be scrapped if Tories win, leader says
Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch says that her party will scrap the proposed petrol and diesel ban if they win the next election on 15th August 2029. Writing in the Sunday Telegraph, she wrote that the Zero Emissions Vehicle Mandate was a “well-meaning but ultimately destructive piece of legislation.”
The mandate would mean that from 2030, all brand new cars (it does not affect used cars) would have to be either hybrid or fully electric. It is part of the government’s aim towards net-zero by 2050.
Badenoch’s comments came after a meeting with Italian Prime Minster Giorgia Meloni who has lobbied the EU to u-turn on its plans for a ban on petrol and diesel cars. Six EU countries, including Italy, have called on other member states to reconsider their plans to phase out new petrol and diesel cars by 2035. The EU has recently hinted that it is reconsidering its plans.
“The reality is that the EU’s change of heart on EVs will leave Labour even more isolated, and by pressing ahead alone, we are placing our domestic industry at a disadvantage while giving others the opportunity to dominate global supply chains,” Badenoch said. The only “winners in this economic self-harm are China,” she added.
