Peter Dunphy Takes Helm of City of London’s Environmental Services

Peter Dunphy has been elected as the new Chairman of the City of London Corporation’s Port Health and Environmental Services Committee, a powerful body with a far-reaching impact on life in the capital and beyond.
This committee covers everything from tackling air pollution in the Square Mile to food safety at ports, pest control, animal welfare at Heathrow, and overseeing one of London’s busiest cemeteries. It’s one of the City’s most wide-ranging responsibilities, and it now falls under Dunphy’s leadership.
A cleaner, safer, more resilient London
Speaking after his election, Peter Dunphy said he was honoured to take on a role that shapes public health, environmental standards, and the capital’s liveability.
“This Committee plays a crucial role in keeping London safe, clean and resilient – not just for the Square Mile, but for the capital and the country,” he said.
“From food safety at the border to tackling pollution, supporting bereaved families, and protecting animal welfare, its work supports millions of people every day.”
The committee’s remit includes the London Port Health Authority, which monitors health risks along the tidal Thames; the Heathrow Animal Reception Centre, the UK’s only all-species animal border checkpoint; and the City of London Cemetery and Crematorium in Manor Park.
Dunphy’s experience
Representing the Ward of Cornhill since 2009, Dunphy has already held some of the City Corporation’s highest internal roles, including Chief Commoner and chair of the Licensing Committee.
His career outside the Corporation spans staffing, private equity, media production, and charity leadership. This blend of public and private experience puts him in a strong position to tackle the environmental, commercial, and social challenges facing London.
He succeeds Mary Durcan, under whose leadership the Corporation launched a new Circular Economy Framework and published its latest Air Quality Strategy, following a 40% fall in nitrogen dioxide and PM10 pollution between 2019 and 2024.
