Pembrokeshire Barracks to Host Cutting-Edge Deep Space Radar Programme

In an exciting development for Pembrokeshire, the Ministry of Defence has unveiled plans to transform the Cawdor Barracks into a hub for a deep space radar programme. This initiative, set to create long-term employment opportunities, is part of the UK’s commitment to bolstering its space monitoring capabilities.

The Deep Space Advanced Radar Capability (DARC) programme aims to detect, track, and identify objects as far as 36,000km from Earth using ground-based radars located in the UK, Australia, and the US. This cutting-edge technology is expected to enhance the defence capabilities of land, air, and maritime forces across these nations.

Located in Brawdy, near St Davids, Cawdor Barracks has a rich history, having served both the Royal Air Force and the Royal Navy. Currently, it houses the 14th Signal Regiment, the army’s electronic warfare unit. While the MoD announced in 2016 that the barracks would close no earlier than 2028, the new radar programme will ensure the site remains operational. According to the government, up to 100 personnel will be required to run the radar capability.

Defence Secretary John Healey emphasised the importance of the programme, stating, “This new radar programme will not only enhance our awareness of deep space, but also help protect our space assets alongside our closest partners.” His sentiments were echoed by Wales Secretary Jo Stevens, who highlighted the project’s significance for the country and the government’s commitment to working with the local community to ensure its success.

In an effort to engage with the community, two information events are scheduled for September. These events will provide locals with the opportunity to learn more about the project and voice their opinions. Representatives from the programme will be present to answer questions and gather feedback. Additionally, an environmental impact assessment is being conducted to support the forthcoming planning application to Pembrokeshire County Council.

For those interested in the details of this groundbreaking project and its implications for both local and national interests, the initiative represents a significant step forward in the UK’s space defence strategy.
