Partnership plans between UK & Canada to accelerate
Amid some of the decisions by the Trump administration, Canada will double down on an “ambitious” new strategic partnership with Britain, the Canadian High Commissioner to London, Ralph Goodale, has told POLITICO.
Following the tariffs introduced by Trump in 2025, the centre-left governments of Canada and the UK have agreed to hasten efforts to form closer ties. Talks for a free trade deal between the two nations collapsed in 2024 over food standards, leaving car manufacturers and dairy exporters facing tariffs in Canada.
But as the tariffs from Trump began to take effect, Canadian PM Mark Carney and Keir Starmer have begun “working very hard” on a new “ambitious” partnership that will include trade, critical minerals, defence, AI, and civil nuclear energy, according to Goodale.
“Those relationships are incredibly valuable in the kind of dangerous and turbulent world in which we live,” he said. “The impact of American policies over the last number of months has had a profound influence on a lot of things in Canada and in the U.K. and around the world. I’m not sure you could find a similar five years in which there was so much international activity and turmoil and consequential events.”
