Paris 2024: Simone Biles’ Comeback, Star-Studded Moments, and Unforgettable Olympics

Simone Biles stole the spotlight at the Paris 2024 Olympics with a stunning comeback that left the world in awe. The greatest gymnast of all time returned to the Games after stepping back in Tokyo 2021 due to mental health challenges. This time, Biles dazzled with four medals, three of them gold, making her the most talked-about athlete in Paris. Yet, while Biles captivated audiences both in and out of the gymnasium, the Paris Games also introduced new names, faces, and even some unlikely stars.

The Paris 2024 Olympics will be remembered for its breathtaking venues and a level of accessibility that set a new standard for global sporting events. In the UK, the Games were widely followed, with Snoop Dogg making waves as a standout commentator in NBC’s record-breaking coverage. His commentary, along with the performances, became viral sensations, earning him the nickname “The Pommel Horse Guy” and drawing comparisons to fictional heroes like “The Real John Wick” in the Olympic debut of breaking (breakdancing).

French swimmer Léon Marchand emerged as a national hero, dominating in his home Olympics with a performance reminiscent of Michael Phelps. Marchand secured five medals, four of them gold, much to the delight of French fans. Meanwhile, Ilona Maher from the United States, who led her team to a historic bronze in rugby sevens, made headlines not just for her athletic prowess but also for her candid appeal to join the reality TV show “Love Island.”

In track and field, American sprinter Noah Lyles was crowned the fastest man in the world after winning the 100 meters. However, his streak ended in the 200 meters, where he finished third after revealing a positive COVID-19 test. Sha’Carri Richardson, another standout on the track, chased down her competitors in the rain to secure relay gold after settling for silver in the 100 meters.

The United States topped the medal count with 126 medals, including 40 golds. The women’s basketball team tied China’s Olympic record with their 40th gold, capping off an impressive showing that saw the Americans dominate in both men’s and women’s basketball and soccer.

The Paris Games were also marked by moments of intense drama and controversy. Women’s boxing was thrust into the spotlight due to gender-related controversies involving two competitors, Imane Khelif of Algeria and Li Yu-ting of Taiwan. Both faced scrutiny over their eligibility, yet both triumphed, with Khelif and Li winning gold in their respective divisions. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) took unprecedented action last year by permanently banning the Russian-dominated International Boxing Association (IBA) from the Olympics, citing concerns over governance and competitive fairness.

As the Games drew to a close, the world’s eyes turned to the grand finale in Paris—a star-studded closing ceremony that will be talked about for years. The ceremony was a mix of celebration and reflection, with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach calling for a “culture of peace” in a world marred by conflict. But it was Tom Cruise who stole the show, making a jaw-dropping entrance by descending from the roof of the Stade de France, Mission: Impossible style, to hand over the Olympic flag to Los Angeles, the host of the 2028 Games.

Cruise’s performance didn’t stop there. In a pre-recorded segment, he rode his motorcycle through the streets of Paris, took off in a plane, and skydived over the Hollywood Hills, adding three rings to the famous Hollywood sign to create the Olympic symbol. The message was clear: Los Angeles 2028 promises to be just as spectacular.

As the Eiffel Tower sparkled in the background and fireworks lit up the night sky, the athletes danced and sang, joined by crowds of spectators and celebrities alike. Grammy-winning artists like Billie Eilish, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Snoop Dogg, who had become a fan favourite during the Games, kept the party going from California in a pre-recorded show. French pop-rock band Phoenix played live, turning the stadium into a massive dance floor as athletes and fans celebrated the end of an unforgettable Olympics.

The Paris 2024 Olympics weren’t just about medals—they were about rediscovering the joy of sport, unity, and national pride. France, which had not hosted the Summer Games in 100 years, made the most of its moment in the spotlight. From the opening ceremony along the Seine to the final extinguishing of the Olympic flame, Paris proved that it could put on a show that will be remembered for generations.

As the lights dimmed and the athletes made their way out of the stadium, the memories of Paris’ special summer lingered. The Games were a triumph, not just for the athletes who competed but for the city that hosted them. With Los Angeles up next, the bar has been set high, but if the closing ceremony was anything to go by, the next Olympics are sure to be just as thrilling.
