Northumberland seaside town named UK’s best four years in a row

A seaside town in Northumberland has been chosen as the country’s best destination for the fourth year in a row. A survey by Which? has named Bamburgh in the North East of England as the nation’s favourite beachfront town once again.

The consumer group surveyed 4,744 people about their experiences in visiting coastal towns across Britain over the past year. The results revealed that people found that the Northumberland village is the best once again as it was given a destination score of 86%.

The Bamburgh Castle above miles of white beaches are among its attractions with one visitor quoted as calling the structure “probably the most impressive castle in the British Isles.” The survey also found that the town, with a population of little over 400 people, was rated five stars for its beach, seafront, scenery, tourist attractions, as well as its peace and quiet.

Bamburgh also finished first in Which? Survey in 2023, 2022, and 2021 and also took the number one spot in 2019, before the pandemic. In 2024, it was ranked above Portmeirion, in Gwynedd, Wales, and St Andrews in Fife, Scotland which took the second and third palaces respectively.

Wales can boast three spots among the top 10 along with St Davids and Llandudno while Cornwall is one county without a single town in the top 15. One Welsh town, Bangor in Gwynedd was at the other end of the rankings, being in last place with a score of just 42%.

Northern Ireland’s Portstewart in Derry was also listed among the top 20 destinations, according to the survey.
