Nintendo Switch 2 UK launch breaks sales records

The long-awaited Nintendo Switch 2 UK launch has finally happened, and if the midnight queues were anything to go by, it’s off to a flying start. Retailers across the country opened their doors to fans eager to get their hands on the upgraded hybrid console, and early sales suggest it’s already shaping up to be one of Nintendo’s biggest launches in years.

Gaming chain Currys described the release as its “biggest gaming pre-order ever,” with over 30,000 units sold, largely snapped up by customers who had reserved the console in advance. While some high street stores did have a few consoles available off the shelf, most of the initial stock went straight into the hands of those who had been counting down the days.

There have been a few early hiccups, including pre-order cancellations from one retailer. However, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. The price tag of £395.99 for the base unit, or £429.99 when bundled with the flagship game Mario Kart World, hasn’t slowed demand. Though some shoppers have hesitated at the game’s standalone price of £74.99, the console’s features appear to be winning people over.

The new model is still very much a hybrid – playable as a handheld device or docked to a television – but it now boasts a larger, brighter screen and significantly more storage and processing power. Fans who had the chance to try it out early noted that everything feels faster and sharper, from graphics performance to gameplay fluidity.

What’s different this time is Nintendo’s naming strategy. This is the first time the company has launched a direct sequel to an existing console rather than creating a new brand name. That move, some believe, has helped build trust and clarity – people know what to expect, and that familiarity seems to be part of its appeal.

At the centre of the launch is Mario Kart World, the latest in a hugely successful series. It’s the first full release since 2014 and features new tracks, expanded multiplayer, and a sprawling open-world format. While it’s the only major Nintendo-exclusive title available at launch, it’s being joined by a strong line-up of third-party games optimised for the new hardware, including fan favourites and enhanced ports.

That said, not everyone is jumping in just yet. Some players are opting to stick with their original Switch consoles due to the high upfront cost. Others are waiting for future titles like Metroid Prime 4 or Super Mario Party Jamboree TV, which are expected later in the year. A few customers are also holding out for future bundle deals.

Still, with upgraded visuals, Joy-Con 2 controllers, and a handful of launch-day enhancements for big games like the Zelda series, the Nintendo Switch 2 is already showing it has staying power. For those picking one up now, it looks set to carry them through many gaming seasons to come.

For those considering a purchase, the Nintendo Switch 2 UK launch has already seen high demand, but stock is still available through selected retailers. You can check availability and bundles directly on the official Nintendo Store UK.
