In a surprising public turn of events, Elon Musk urges Nigel Farage to be replaced as the leader of Reform UK, just weeks after rumours circulated about the tech billionaire potentially donating to the party. Taking to his social media platform, X, Musk claimed Farage “doesn’t have what it takes” to lead but did not elaborate further.
Farage, who has often described Musk as a friend, responded to the remarks by suggesting the fallout was linked to Musk’s vocal support for far-right activist Tommy Robinson. Farage stood firm, stating, “Elon is a remarkable individual, but on this, I disagree. My view remains that Tommy Robinson is not right for Reform, and I never sell out my principles.”
This rift comes after Musk’s controversial post, “Free Tommy Robinson now,” just moments after Farage publicly rejected the idea of aligning Reform UK with Robinson. Robinson, whose real name is Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, is currently serving an 18-month prison sentence for contempt of court.
Despite this clash, Farage continues to hold Musk in high regard, recently calling him a “hero” during an interview with the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg. Farage remarked that Musk had made Reform UK “look cool,” but he was quick to clarify that their friendship doesn’t mean they agree on everything; you can watch the full interview here.

Musk, who has reportedly been exploring UK politics more closely, has also sparked debates on other issues, including grooming gang inquiries. His recent criticism of Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer and calls for a national inquiry into historical sexual abuse cases have raised eyebrows. Musk went as far as accusing Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips of being a “rape genocide apologist,” prompting widespread backlash.
Although discussions of Musk donating $100m (£80.5m) to Reform UK were previously hinted at, it seems such plans are now on hold. As a US citizen, Musk cannot make direct political donations in the UK but could potentially contribute through the British arm of his company, X.
For now, the question remains whether the bond between Farage and Musk can endure these recent tensions or if Reform UK will face leadership changes amid growing public scrutiny.
