Murder rate in London falls to lowest level on record
The murder rate in London has fallen to the lowest level since records began, new statistics have found. New figures from the London Assembly reveal that in the first nine months of 2025, January to September, 89 homicides were recorded in the capital, making it the lowest level for the capital since 2003 when records began. It represents a 60% fall compared to then.
“Some politicians and commentators continue to denigrate London and talk our great city down, but the facts show a very different picture,” London Mayor Sadiq Khan wrote on X as he shared the figures.
The figures also show the lowest number of teenage homicide since 2012, as well as a reduction by 10% in admissions to hospitals among those under 25 for knife assaults over the 12 months until June 2025.
Overall, the murder rate in London is below that of other major European capitals including Paris, Brussels, Berlin, and Madrid. Office for National Statistics figures reveal that the those in the capital are less likely on average to fall victim to violence with injury offences compared with the rest of England and Wales.
These figures follow data from a few months ago that reveal a fall in knife crime, robbery, and theft in London compared to the same period in 2024.
