Munich Car Attack Leaves 28 Injured as Police Investigate Motive
A devastating Munich car attack has left at least 28 people injured after a Mini Cooper was deliberately driven into a crowd near the city’s central train station. The driver, a 24-year-old Afghan asylum seeker, was arrested at the scene after police fired at the vehicle to bring it to a stop. Among the injured are children and several individuals in critical condition, according to emergency services.
The attack took place around 10:30 am during a demonstration linked to the Verdi services trade union. Witnesses described scenes of chaos as the vehicle accelerated towards the crowd, sending people running for cover. Police are investigating the suspect’s motives and have asked anyone with information or footage to come forward.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz responded to the attack with strong words, stating that the perpetrator “must be punished and must leave the country.” His comments come amid growing political debate in Germany over asylum laws and public safety. Bavarian Premier Markus Söder called the incident a “suspected attack” and stressed the urgent need to address such threats swiftly.
The timing of the attack has raised concerns, as Munich is currently preparing to host the high-profile Munich Security Conference, where world leaders including U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are expected to attend. Authorities have stated that there is no indication the attack is linked to the conference, but security measures in the city are being reinforced.
Police have also confirmed that the suspect was known to authorities for previous theft and drug-related offences. While there have been unconfirmed reports of a second person in the vehicle, officers have not yet established whether anyone else was involved.
The area around Dachauer Straße and Seidlstraße remains cordoned off as forensic teams and emergency services continue their work. Germany has witnessed a number of violent attacks in recent years, and with federal elections just 10 days away, this incident is likely to intensify discussions on security and migration policies.
As investigations in the Munich car attack continue, the people of Munich, and indeed much of Europe, will be watching closely to see how authorities respond to another tragic act of violence in a public space.
Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward, and updates on the investigation can be found on the German Federal Police website.
