Heartbreak as Missing Emu Irwin Found in River Avon After Week-Long Search

A week-long search for missing emu Irwin, a much-loved resident of Malmesbury Animal Sanctuary, came to a sorrowful end on Sunday when he was found dead in the River Avon. Irwin had been missing since 30th September, and despite the tireless efforts of sanctuary volunteers and supporters, hopes of a happy reunion faded when he was discovered near a bridge that had been difficult to access due to fast-flowing water.

Irwin’s disappearance sparked a public appeal, with people from the local community, as well as sanctuary volunteers, joining the search. Some volunteers waded into the river, while others used paddleboards to scan less accessible areas. Though emus can swim, the sanctuary speculated that Irwin may have struggled due to high water levels following recent heavy rainfall, especially if he entered the river at night.

The sanctuary, sharing the news of Irwin’s passing with a heavy heart, described him as a “jolly emu who loved cuddles.” Irwin’s unique personality made him a favourite among staff and visitors. His playful antics included a fondness for cold showers during summer, where he would roll over and shake himself dry, only to look up expectantly for another dousing. Known to be “feisty,” Irwin even had a knack for chasing the younger emus around his enclosure, embodying a spirit of fun and adventure.

Malmesbury Animal Sanctuary extended heartfelt thanks to everyone who offered support, sent messages of hope, and reposted information about Irwin on social media. The sanctuary expressed deep gratitude for the positive energy and communal spirit that bolstered their efforts over the past week.

Although Irwin’s story ended sadly, his memory will live on at the sanctuary, where several other emus continue to roam. Notably, one of his feathered friends gained local fame when he unexpectedly played a role in a police chase, reaching the suspect’s field before the authorities did—a lighthearted anecdote that staff now share with bittersweet smiles.
