Ancient Mega Meteorite Devastated Earth’s Oceans and Seabed, Triggering Massive Tsunami

Scientists have uncovered details about a colossal meteorite that struck Earth three billion years ago. The impact caused a tsunami larger than any in history and boiled the oceans. Discovered in 2014, this meteorite was 200 times bigger than the one that wiped out the dinosaurs.

A team of researchers, including Prof. Nadja Drabon from Harvard University, investigated the impact site in South Africa’s Barberton Greenbelt. They collected rock samples to study the meteorite’s effects. Despite the destruction, their research shows these impacts may have helped early life thrive.

The meteorite, named S2, created a 500-kilometer crater. Molten rock particles flew across the globe, and the collision produced intense heat. This boiled the oceans and raised air temperatures by up to 100°C. The skies darkened, and massive tsunamis swept the coastlines. Although life was disrupted, simple organisms survived and even flourished afterward.
