Mayor of London reaction to King’s Speech

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has expressed his strong support for the recent King’s Speech, highlighting its positive implications for London and the entire country. The Mayor praised the new government’s ambitious agenda, describing it as a significant shift in policy after years of what he characterised as stagnation for the capital.

In a statement, Mayor Khan remarked, “I wholeheartedly welcome the King’s Speech, which is good news for London and the whole country. The new government has set out the first steps and missions to rebuild Britain, marking a significant change of approach after years of London being held back.”

One of the key components of the speech that Khan welcomed was the introduction of the English Devolution Bill. He believes this legislation will be instrumental in unlocking the potential of cities like London. “It’s refreshing to have a government that recognises the vital role that regional mayors can play in boosting economic growth, building more homes, and improving local communities,” Khan stated.

The Mayor also lauded the government’s commitment to tackling violent crime, particularly through measures to ban dangerous knives. This initiative, according to Khan, addresses a pressing issue that has plagued many London communities. Additionally, he welcomed new laws aimed at providing greater security for private renters, including the abolition of no-fault evictions. These measures, Khan noted, are issues he has consistently advocated for.

Furthermore, Khan praised the government’s plans for cleaner, greener energy, which he believes will have a profound impact nationwide. “The Government’s plans for cleaner, greener energy will make a huge difference all around the country,” he said.

Acknowledging that change will not be immediate, Khan emphasised that the King’s Speech represents a pivotal moment. “Change is not going to happen overnight, but this is clearly a turning point. I look forward to working hand-in-hand with the new government as we build a fairer, safer, and greener London for everyone and help deliver the change Britain needs,” he concluded.

Mayor Khan’s enthusiastic reception of the King’s Speech signals a new era of collaboration between London’s leadership and the central government, aiming to foster growth, safety, and sustainability in the capital and beyond.
