Many drivers unfamiliar with dashboard warning lights

Drivers are encouraged to familiarise themselves with their dashboard warning lights. Recent research from Warrantywise has revealed that 46% of drivers, potentially as many as 23 million people, are unable to identify half of the warning lights on the dashboard. With cars becoming more technologically advanced, this lack of understanding puts could not only put drivers at risk but also lead to avoidable and expensive repairs.
Modern car dashboards are equipped with sophisticated warning systems designed to relay important information about the car’s health. This can include a simple reminder, such as low washer fluid, or serious warnings about brake failures or engine malfunctions.
The research, Warrantywise says, “highlights a troubling knowledge gap” as many drivers are unclear about what the lights mean or how urgently they should act if they see one appearing.
The survey also revealed that 3% of drivers or 1.5 million people, can’t identify any dashboard warning lights. This would leave them especially vulnerable to an unexpected breakdown or expensive repair bill. Ignoring or misinterpreting one can lead to delayed repairs, resulting in more extensive and expensive damage. In some cases, it can even compromise important safety systems for the driver and passengers.
