Lord Mayor Alastair King Leads Historic Procession in London

On 9 November 2024, Lord Mayor Alastair King led the exuberant and historic Lord Mayor’s Show through the streets of London, marking his first official public appearance as the 696th Lord Mayor. Thousands gathered to witness the grand procession, which has been a cherished tradition since the 13th century, celebrating the new Lord Mayor’s role as head of the City of London Corporation. Lord Mayor Alastair King succeeds Professor Michael Mainelli.
The procession, renowned as the world’s oldest civic parade, was a spectacle to behold. It featured over 7,000 participants, 250 horses, and more than 50 elaborately decorated floats. Notable appearances included the Royal Regiment of Scotland, characters from the Beano magazine, and various livery companies, all contributing to the vibrant atmosphere.
Beginning at the Mansion House at 11 am, the parade meandered through the city’s streets, culminating outside the Royal Courts of Justice. Alderman King, adorned in traditional regalia, rode in the iconic golden state coach, waving to the enthusiastic crowds lining the route.
In anticipation of the event, Mr. King expressed his enthusiasm: “The Lord Mayor’s Show is the soul of London – as unique as it is historic – and it will be a privilege to be at the heart of this wonderful event, which connects the traditions of London’s past to the modern-day world.”
