Met Police urges public to stay alert ahead of London’s busy events weekend

A London events police alert has been issued as the capital prepares for one of its busiest weekends of the year, with the TCS London Marathon, FA Cup semi-finals, St George’s Day celebrations, and planned protests all taking place across the city. Officers will be deployed in key areas to provide a visible and reassuring presence, helping to keep events running smoothly while keeping a close eye on any potential disruption.

Saturday’s events bring a lively mix of sport and celebration. St George’s Day festivities will see communities coming together, while Crystal Palace and Aston Villa meet for the first FA Cup semi-final at Wembley. Tottenham Hotspur Stadium also hosts a boxing event, adding to the footfall across key parts of the city. Meanwhile, a Just Stop Oil protest is planned to take place in Westminster, with police warning they will act quickly if demonstrations cross into criminal disruption.

Sunday is set to be even busier, with a record-breaking 56,000 runners taking part in the TCS London Marathon. Crowds are expected along the full route, from Greenwich to The Mall, and anyone travelling in or around central London is advised to plan ahead. The second FA Cup semi-final between Nottingham Forest and Manchester City adds another major draw, with both fans and wider visitors contributing to the day’s pressure on transport and public spaces.

Andy Valentine, overseeing this weekend’s policing operation, has called for public vigilance. He said: “This is the sort of weekend where London comes to life as millions make plans to enjoy the city and the many events taking place. Our role is to provide a reassuring presence, ensure gatherings take place safely and securely, and respond to any incidents or offences.” He added that officers will intervene decisively if protests move into criminal activity.

The Met has also reminded the public that reporting anything unusual, however small it might seem, can make a difference. Officers, stewards, and emergency services staff will be highly visible and ready to assist, and Londoners are encouraged to speak to them if needed.

For those planning to travel, it’s worth checking for road closures and public transport changes linked to the marathon. Advice and updates are available via the TFL website.
