Library of Things saves residents £170,000

Hammersmith & Fulham residents have saved £170,000 this year by borrowing from the Library of Things rather than buying new items. With over 1,180 items borrowed, for as little as £1.50 in some cases, they are both cutting costs and reducing household clutter in one go.
This means combined savings of over £900,000 since the scheme was launched in 2022, supporting families through the cost of living crisis and also preventing waste and carbon emissions.
“This is a win for people and the planet,” Cllr Wesley Harcourt, H&F Cabinet Member for Climate Change and Ecology, said. “We’re helping residents save on costs while protecting the environment, which is all the more important if household budgets, or storage, are tight.”
Over the last three years, residents in Hammersmith & Fulham have also contributed to around 217.9 tonnes of “green savings, including 44 tonnes of waste, 130 tonnes of CO2, and 44 tonnes of electrical items used.
The Hammersmith location for the Library of Things at Livat shopping mall in King Street is among the most popular in the country, with more than 6,000 items borrowed by 4,000 users.
