LFB calls on Londoners to “act responsibility” due to wildfire risk

The London Fire Brigade (LFB) is calling on Londoners to exercise caution as the Met Office issues an amber wildfire warning for the capital. Despite the absence of summer-like temperatures, the unseasonably dry conditions have heightened the risk of wildfires across the city.

The LFB has emphasised that even a small spark can ignite dry grass, shrubs, or litter, leading to rapid fire spread. Common culprits include discarded cigarettes, unattended rubbish, and the use of disposable barbecues.

Assistant Commissioner Paul McCourt stated, “We want everyone to enjoy the sunshine but we urge people to take the necessary precautions to stay safe and help prevent a grass fire from starting.” He highlighted recent international incidents demonstrating how quickly outdoor fires can escalate, even in moderate temperatures.

With the wildfire warning in place for the remainder of the week, the LFB advises Londoners to:

  • Avoid using barbecues in open spaces or on balconies, including disposable ones. Many of London’s parks have banned disposable barbecues, and violations can result in a £100 fine.
  • Dispose of cigarettes and matches properly, ensuring they are completely extinguished. Never discard them out of car windows or onto the ground.
  • Take rubbish home or place it securely in bins. Leftover litter, especially glass bottles, can pose significant fire risks as sunlight passing through glass can ignite fires.

The LFB is collaborating with local authorities to manage risks in outdoor spaces and ensure public adherence to safety guidelines. The National Fire Chiefs Council has also called for long-term investment to address the growing climate-related fire risks, noting a significant increase in wildfire incidents compared to previous years.

As temperatures are expected to rise, with forecasts predicting highs of 24°C on Friday, Londoners are encouraged by firefighters to remain vigilant. By following safety advice and acting responsibly, residents can help prevent devastating wildfires and protect the city’s green spaces.
