Justice Department sues Washington DC over gun control

The US Justice Department is suing Washington DC over a law that bans its residents from registering semi-automatic guns such as AR-15s. Under the district’s law, all gun owners must register any weapon they own with local police. Fast-loading guns such as AR-15s are barred from being registered.

Attorney General Pam Bondi said the “ban on some of America’s most popular firearms is an unconstitutional infringement on the Second Amendment,” in a statement.

The lawsuit filed by the Justice Department is the latest grapple between the nation’s Democrat majority capital and Republicans in the federal government over gun control. The district’s laws must be approved by congress, with some of its previous efforts to pass gun control laws being blocked by Republicans.

The Trump administration has fought to cut federal restrictions on the district. US Attorney for DC and former TV commentator Jeanine Pirro said that her office will no longer seek felony charges against those carrying rifles or shotguns.

“D.C. Code currently prohibits the registration of the AR-15 and other semi-automatic rifles, which makes it illegal for law-abiding citizens to possess these firearms in the home for lawful purposes,” the Justice Department attorneys said in a complaint in federal court.

Only residents without criminal records can register a small number of firearms, and only after completing mandatory safety training. It also requires owners to have registrations to carry a weapon outside of their homes and places restrictions on where guns can be carried when out in public.
