Jordan and Uzbekistan to debut at 2026 World Cup
Uzbekistan and Jordan have both secured qualification to their first World Cups, while fellow Asian nation, South Korea has also guaranteed a spot. They have become the eighth, ninth, and tenth teams to confirm their place at the newly expanded 48-team tournament in the USA, Canada, and Mexico.
The host nations qualify automatically under FIFA’s rules, while Jordan, Uzbekistan, and South Korea will join New Zealand, Iran, and reigning world champions Argentina. Uzbekistan drew 0-0 with the UAE and South Korea defeated Iraq 2-0 to secure their 11th consecutive World Cup. Jordan meanwhile defeated Oman 3-0 to confirm their historic qualification.
Uzbekistan is ranked 57th in the World and has a population of 36 million. Its first match as an independent nation came only in 1992 following the breakup of the Soviet Union. It would become a FIFA member two years later. The closest it ever came was in 2006 where they would lose to Trinidad and Tobago who made it to the tournament in Germany.
Jordan is ranked 62nd in the world. The Arab nation is competing in their seventh qualifier, their first being in 1986 for the tournament in Mexico. Jordan is also the Asian Cup runner-up. Their closest chance was in 2014, losing an intercontinental play-off to two-time world champions (1930 and 1950) Uruguay for a spot in the 2014 tournament in Brazil.
