Israel and Hamas Agree to Gaza Ceasefire and Hostage Release

Israel and Hamas have reached a significant agreement for a Gaza ceasefire and the release of hostages, as announced by Qatar and the United States. This development, brokered with the involvement of US President Joe Biden and Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani, promises to bring relief to many after 15 months of war. According to Sheikh Mohammed, the ceasefire is set to begin on Sunday, pending Israeli cabinet approval.

President Biden expressed optimism, stating that the agreement would halt the violence in Gaza, facilitate humanitarian aid for Palestinian civilians, and reunite hostages with their families. Meanwhile, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed gratitude to Biden for his support, while Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya attributed the deal to Palestinian “resilience.”

The ceasefire marks the first phase of a broader agreement that includes a six-week timeline for exchanging hostages and prisoners, providing aid to displaced populations, and beginning the reconstruction of Gaza. Notably, this phase will see 33 hostages, including women and children, exchanged for Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails. Israeli forces will withdraw from densely populated areas, allowing displaced Palestinians to return to their homes and aid trucks to enter Gaza daily.

Despite the announcement, violence continues on the ground. The Hamas-run Civil Defence agency reported that over 20 people were killed in Israeli airstrikes, including 12 in Gaza City’s Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood. The Israeli military has not commented.

Since the conflict began on 7th October 2023, following a cross-border attack by Hamas that killed approximately 1,200 people, Gaza has seen devastating casualties. The Hamas-run health ministry reports over 46,700 deaths, widespread displacement, and severe shortages of essential supplies.

Looking forward, negotiations for the second phase of the agreement will focus on releasing remaining hostages, a full Israeli troop withdrawal, and establishing a “sustainable calm.” The third and final stage will involve Gaza’s reconstruction and the return of any remaining hostages’ bodies—a process expected to take years.

International leaders have welcomed the deal. President Biden highlighted the diplomatic efforts involved, stating, “It is long past time for the fighting to end and the work of building peace and security to begin.” Israeli President Isaac Herzog acknowledged the challenges ahead but called the agreement a necessary step.

However, some in Netanyahu’s coalition oppose the deal, citing the planned release of Palestinian prisoners, many convicted of serious crimes. Families of victims will have 48 hours to appeal the releases once the prisoner names are published.

As Gaza prepares for the ceasefire, emotions are mixed. In central Gaza, people celebrated the announcement, waving Palestinian flags and expressing hope. Yet, many remain cautious, recognising the long road ahead. A British-Israeli woman, Sharone Lifschitz, whose father remains a hostage, described the agreement as a “bit of sanity” amidst the chaos, while acknowledging the uncertainty of her father’s fate.

This agreement represents a rare moment of potential progress in a deeply entrenched conflict, but its success will depend on the commitment of all parties to fulfil their obligations.

Humanitarian organisations, such as the International Committee of the Red Cross, have emphasised the importance of ensuring aid reaches those in need as part of the ceasefire agreement.
