Household Support Fund: £200 cost of living grants available through local councils
The Household Support Fund is continuing into 2025–26, offering grants of up to £200 to households facing financial pressure. Between April 2025 and March 2026, the UK Government has allocated £742 million to councils in England to distribute according to local needs.
Councils use the money to help residents cover essentials such as food, energy, rent and household bills. Support is provided either through direct bank transfers or prepaid vouchers, so that even households without bank accounts can access help.

As one Hackney resident told EyeOnLondon, “Without the grant we’d be choosing between heating and food. It makes a big difference, even if it’s short term.”
Eligibility and priority groups
Each council sets its own criteria, but most require:
- Proof of permanent residence in the council area
- Minimum age of 18
- Evidence of low income or limited savings
- Current receipt of benefits such as Universal Credit with housing support, Housing Benefit, or Council Tax Reduction
Priority is often given to pensioner households and families with children. Some councils restrict repeat claims within the same funding cycle so more residents can benefit.
How different councils apply the grant
Approaches vary widely across England:
- Wealden District Council: £200 payments available from August 2025, issued within 14 days of approval.
- Portsmouth City Council: £150 for single households and £200 for families, with a focus on energy and water bills.
- Hull City Council: £200 payments issued automatically to pensioner households based on benefit records.
These variations show how funding is adapted to local priorities while maintaining the core aim of providing immediate support.
Applying for help
Where applications are required, councils typically request ID, proof of benefits and bank details. Payments are usually processed within two weeks. Where automatic systems are in place, eligible households are identified from council records and receive payments without applying.
Deadlines differ, so residents are advised to check their council’s website regularly. Information can also be found at gov.uk.
Beyond the £200 grant
The Household Support Fund is also used to fund food parcels, energy top-ups, and access to debt or money advice. By combining direct payments with wider support, councils aim to reduce both immediate hardship and longer-term financial risks.
