Homicides at lowest level since 2018

Early figures show that London has recorded the lowest number of homicides in June, July, and August since 2018. For under-25s, the capital has recorded the lowest number for 22 years and for teenagers, the lowest number since 2012.
So far this year, there have been ten under-25 homicides recorded, compared with 26 by the same point last year. The number of teenage homicides has also fallen, from nine last year to four. Across all ages, the number has fallen by a quarter compared with the start of September last year, 78 down to 58.
This follows the latest crime statistics from the ONS that show that Londoners are, on average, less likely to fall victim to a violence with injury offence than across the rest of England and Wales. Since May 2016, homicides, knife crime with injury for under-25s, violence with injury, burglary, and gun crime lethal barrel discharge have fallen throughout London.
The mayor will invest a “record” £1.6 billion into the Met Police in 2025/26, over twice the investment in policing compared with his predecessor, as Khan “continues to focus on tackling the root causes of violence by investing in youth provision.”
The Met’s “proactive approach,” according to a press release from City Hall, is having a “direct impact” on violent crime. “Its specialist teams are disrupting more serious and organised crime groups than ever before, tackling drug dealing and county lines, while safeguarding those forced into criminality via exploitation. Targeting those groups has led to hundreds of arrests and court outcomes, and the seizure of hundreds of weapons.”
